Georgia Tech faculty and staff receive recognition.
Professor Said Abdel-Khalik in the School of Mechanical Engineering received the 2006 Outstanding Achievement Award of the American Nuclear Society's Fusion Energy Division in recognition of “a continued history of exemplary individual achievement requiring professional excellence and leadership of a high caliber in the fusion science and engineering area.”
Ravi Bellamkonda, a professor in the Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Tech and Emory University, was named a Georgia Cancer Coalition Distinguished Cancer Scholar for 2007. The Coalition selects scientists engaged in the most promising areas of cancer research. Bellamkonda's area of interest is nanotechnology for cancer imaging and therapy.
Associate Professor Robert Braun in the School of Aerospace Engineering was named a fellow by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.
Professors Abhijit Chatterjee and Joseph L.A. Hughes in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering were named fellows by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the world's leading professional association for the advancement of technology. Chatterjee was recognized for his contributions to testing analog and mixed signal circuits. Hughes was cited for his contributions to engineering education program development, assessment and accreditation activities.
Georgia Tech Research Institute principal research engineer Larry Corey was named a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

Georgia Tech Lorraine Assistant Professor Nico Declercq of the School of Mechanical Engineering received the International Dennis Gabor Award from the NOVOFER Foundation for Technical and Intellectual Creation. The award honors young researchers who have made a significant contribution to science.
Professor Stephen P. DeWeerth of the Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Tech and Emory University was named to the College of Fellows of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering.
The Georgia Tech Research Institute Office of Communications and the Georgia Tech Research News & Publications Office won the Grand Award from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) District III for media relations. The groups, led by Kirk Englehardt and John Toon, were cited for promoting non-military research in a military-focused organization.
For his contributions to the growth of Georgia's life sciences industry, Don Giddens, dean of the College of Engineering, was awarded the 2007 Biomedical Industry Growth Award by the Georgia Biomedical Partnership.
Georgia Tech Research Institute principal research scientist Gary Gimmestad was selected as a Fellow of the International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE).
The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) awarded the distinction of Fellow to four Georgia Tech faculty members in November 2006. They are:

- Evans M. Harrell II, associate dean of the College of Sciences and a professor of mathematics, was elected for contributions to the study of spectra associated with partial differential equations, particularly gaps and lower bounds for eigenvalues of Schrödinger operators.
- Boris Mizaikoff, an associate professor in the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry, was elected for building bridges with industry through his academic research in sensors and for facilitating technology transfer between academia and industry.
- Nancy Nersessian, a professor of cognitive science in the College of Computing and School of Public Policy, was elected for shaping understanding of scientific creativity and developing new methods for analyzing historical accounts of scientific innovations.
- Zhong Lin Wang, a Regents Professor in the School of Materials Science and Engineering, was elected for seminal contributions to the discovery, synthesis, understanding and applications of novel one-dimensional nanomaterials. His work has impacted materials science, microscopy and nanotechnology.
- Gary May, a professor and chair of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, received the 2006 Mentor Award from the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). The award honors extraordinary leadership that increases the involvement of under-represented groups in science and engineering fields.

With its annual Golden Torch Academic Awards, the National Society of Black Engineers recognized S. Gordon Moore as Minority Engineering Program Director of the Year. Moore is educational services director of Georgia Tech's Office of Minority Educational Development.
Cited for “advancing the science of human cognition and applying it to engineer important aerospace applications,” the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) awarded the 2007 AIAA Lawrence Sperry Award to Associate Professor Amy Pritchett of the School of Aerospace Engineering.
For his paper “A Theory of Enterprise Transformation,” Professor William Rouse of the School of Industrial and Systems Engineering and the College of Computing received the Outstanding Journal Paper Award from the International Council of Systems Engineers.
