GISELE BENNETT


The Association for Asian American Studies has awarded its 2006 Lifetime Achievement Award to Ronald Bayor, a Georgia Tech professor of History, Technology and Society. Among other things, the association cited Bayor's role as founding editor of the Journal of American Ethnic History.

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) named the following Georgia Tech Research Institute faculty as senior members: Gisele Bennett, director of the Electro-Optical Systems Laboratory (EOSL); Barry Bullard, director of the Huntsville Research Laboratory, and Brent Wagner, a senior research scientist in EOSL.

Researchers Margie Brown and Therese Turman and undergraduate student Jennifer Drake in the Georgia Tech Research Institute’s Information Technology and Telecommunications Laboratory received Merit Awards from the Atlanta chapter of the Society of Technical Communication for their work on the OuttaSite! online newsletter that helps families explore the Internet together, safely and effectively.

Charles Carstensen, a principal research scientist in the Georgia Tech Research Institute’s Electro-Optical Systems Laboratory, received the prestigious Bill Goodell Award at the 2006 Military Sensing Symposium on Infrared Countermeasures.

BRUCE ELLINGWOOD


Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering Bruce Ellingwood was presented with the 2006 Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Institute of Steel Construction. Ellingwood was cited for his research and for sustained professional contributions to the development and implementation of probability-based codified structural design for steel buildings and other structures.

Joseph L.A. Hughes, a professor and associate chair in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, was named a Fellow of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) for contributions to engineering education through program development, assessment and accreditation activities.

John Krige, Kranzberg Professor in the School of History, Technology and Society, received the Dickinson Memorial Medal at the 26th Annual Dickinson Lecture of the Newcomen Society for the study of the history of technology and science.

Michael Mateas, an assistant professor in the College of Computing and the School of Literature, Communication and Culture won the second annual Slamdance Guerilla Gamemaker Competition at the recent independent Slamdance Film Festival, honoring independent gamemakers and filmmakers. The event was held alongside the Sundance Film Festival. Mateas and co-developer Andrew Stern of Procedural Arts won the Grand Jury Sparky Award for “Façade,” a one-act interactive drama.

Professor Gary May, chair of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, received the Janice Lumpkin Educator of the Year Award from the National Society of Black Engineers. He was honored for his work in semiconductors, integrated circuits and intelligent electronic systems, and his commitment to minority engineering education.

Nancy Nersessian, professor of cognitive science at the College of Computing, was recently elected a foreign member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. The appointment recognizes Nersessian’s outstanding scientific achievements in cognitive science and her ongoing efforts to further the development and impact of this interdisciplinary field.

GREG NOBLES


Shuming Nie, a professor in the Walter H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering, was selected by the Trustees of the Lord Rank Prize Fund as the 2006 recipient of the Lord Rank Prize in Opto-Electronics for his outstanding contributions to the science and application of opto-electronics.

Greg Nobles, a professor in the School of History, Technology and Society, was recently named to the Distinguished Lectureship Program of the Organization of American Historians. In 2005, he was elected to the Advisory Council of the Society for Historians of the Early American Republic.

For innovative contributions to the understanding and application of the nonlinear optical properties of organic materials, Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry Joseph Perry has been elevated to the rank of fellow of the Optical Society of America.

A team of engineers in the Aerospace Systems Design Lab in the School of Aerospace Engineering received the Society of Automotive Engineers International’s Arch T. Colwell Merit Award. Christopher Raczynski, a graduate research assistant; Michelle Kirby, a research engineer, and Professor Dimitri Mavris, received the award for their paper “Technology Portfolio Assessments Using a Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithm.”

Bill Sayle, professor and associate chair emeritus of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, received the American Society for Engineering Education Distinguished Educator Award for sustained contributions to electrical and computer engineering education through leadership in accreditation activities, development of global engineering education programs and service to the organization.

ANDREA STRAUSS


Assistant Professor Andrea Strauss in the College of Architecture received the National Band Association Citation of Excellence at the 2006 Georgia Music Educators' Association In-service Conference. This award recognizes outstanding contribution to bands and band music.

The Georgia Tech Research News and Publications Office managed by John Toon and the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) Communications Office directed by Kirk Englehardt received a bronze medal in the Circle of Excellence Awards Program sponsored by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education. The staff was recognized for its efforts in publicizing GTRI’s development of a concept military combat vehicle designed to improve survivability and mobility.

Jim Wiltse, a researcher in the Georgia Tech Research Institute’s Sensors and Electromagnetic Applications Laboratory, was elected a fellow in The International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE).
