TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER

The move into dental technology is a natural one for GTRI, says Jeff Sitterle, GTRI’s chief scientist and director of its biomedicine initiative.

“Although it’s a medical field, many of the technologies that we’ve developed for the defense industry can be adapted for dentistry,” he explains, pointing to GTRI’s expertise in materials development, photonics and optics, nanotechnology, software and other tech sectors.

The Georgia Institute of Technology’s Dental Technology Center – DenTeC@Georgia Tech – is a nonprofit, multidisciplinary research center focused on advancing dental science and technology. By integrating Georgia Tech’s world-renowned engineering expertise and dental science, DenTeC is introducing new products and technologies for dentistry and craniofacial medicine through multidisciplinary research, testing and education.

“Georgia Tech’s vision is to offer unbiased, scientific information on dental technology. We evaluate the products on the market now and then provide this information to dentists to help them become better consumers.... ”

DENTAL ERGONOMICS

Ergonomics is an important issue for the dental industry, points out Brad Fain, a senior research scientist in GTRI's Electronic Systems Laboratory. "Some research has been done on the dentist's posture," he explains. "But little work has been done regarding the dental assistant or patient – and virtually no studies that integrate the three. And that's what you have to take into account."
