Faculty Research in the News Georgia Tech researchers' work covered in the news media.

The New York Times reported on the development of an improved method for directly writing nanometer-scale patterns onto a variety of surfaces. The research is a collaboration between Georgia Tech Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering William King and scientists at the Naval Research Laboratory. Researchers in the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry have developed a new class of water-soluble quantum dots made from small numbers of gold atoms.

Science News and The Scientist published reports on a new class of water-soluble quantum dots made from small numbers of gold atoms. This research, led by Associate Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry Robert Dickson, could be the basis for a new biological labeling system with narrower excitation spectra, smaller particle size and fluorescence comparable to systems based on semiconductor quantum dots. Civil Engineering, Indoor Comfort News, and Sensors magazines reported on the development of radar technology to detect mold behind gypsum wallboard. The research is being conducted by research scientist Victor DeJesus and principal research scientist Gene Greneker in the Georgia Tech Research Institute. Scripps Howard News Service, the 35-million circulation AARP Bulletin and Design News reported on a study by School of Psychology Professor Wendy Rogers that indicates older adults are willing to give up some privacy -- if it enables them to live independently longer. Government Product News and The Police Chief reported on an enhanced high-tech, collaborative mapping tool that is helping law enforcement and emergency management officials better coordinate event and incident planning and real-time response. The development is led by senior research engineer Kirk Pennywitt in the Georgia Tech Research Institute. Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue also described the system in his column published in the Georgia technology magazine TechLINKS. Sensors, InTech and Motion System Design covered news of Atlanta-based Radatec Inc.’s development of a new breed of non-contact displacement sensor designed at Georgia Tech’s Manufacturing Research Center and the Georgia Tech Research Institute by Scott Billington and Jonathan Geisheimer. Georgia Tech researchers have developed a new class of composite fiber that includes carbon nanotubes. The nanostructures improve strength and other properties of the fiber.

The Ottawa Citizen, a Canadian newspaper, and WaterWorld magazine site covered Georgia Tech research about the sequestering of persistent chlorinated, fluorinated and chloro-fluoro chemicals by the common aquatic plant duckweed. Professor Michael Saunders in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering is the principal investigator. (See the Research News article at gtresearchnews.gatech.edu/newsrelease/wetlands.htm).

The Atlanta Business Chronicle and Chemical Engineering Progress reported on the formation of the Georgia Tech Center for Drug Design, Development and Delivery, an interdiscplinary center that includes more than 20 faculty members working on pharmaceutical issues. Associate Professor Mark Prausnitz in the School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering is the director. USA Today Magazine covered the Georgia Tech Research Institute’s work on the Global Justice XML Data Model, which is the software basis for information sharing within the public safety and justice community. Textile World, Science News, Advanced Materials and AATCC Review reported on the development of a new class of composite fibers that includes carbon nanotubes. The nanostructures improve strength and both thermal and electrical conductivity in the fibers. Professor Satish Kumar in the School of Polymer, Textile and Fiber Engineering leads the research. Civil Engineering and Signal published articles on landmine detection technology being developed by researchers in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Georgia Tech Research Institute. The Atlanta Business Chronicle reported on the work of the Georgia Tech Procurement Assistance Center (GTPAC), a federally-funded program that helps Georgia companies do business with the federal government. Zack Osborne is director of GTPAC, which is part of the Economic Development Institute (EDI). (See the EDI news release at www.edi.gatech.edu/articles/articlesans.cfm?ID=196).

Three Morris Communications newspapers – the Augusta Chronicle, Savannah Morning News and Athens Banner-Herald – reported on the Economic Development Institute’s (EDI) Georgia Minority Business Development Center in an article about resources for minority businesses.
